LenioBio, a Düsseldorf-based biotech company, is pioneering the first eukaryotic cell-free protein production platform ALiCE®, scalable according to customer’s needs. Originally developed by DowDuPont and the Fraunhofer Institute IME, we are scaling this novel platform, unconstrained by the limitations of the cell, bringing therapeutic and food proteins to market faster and more affordably.

LenioBio, founded in 2016 in Germany, closed its Series A investment round with private investors in August 2019 and won the prestigious Horizon 2020 /SME-2 grant from the European Commission.

We have a position available for a Senior Bioprocessing Engineer to join our international R&D team in Aachen. The company aims to move to its new Single-Use Facility in the Düsseldorf area in 2022/23.

About this job

As Senior Bioprocess Engineer, you will lead and manage research and development activities to successfully scale the upstream and downstream processing of recombinant proteins. In this position, your main role will be in the development of the complete process from the laboratory through the pilot plant into commercial facilities. You will play a key role in strategic partner relationships for each of these scales. Your responsibilities:

  • lead the strategic and tactical direction in both upstream and downstream process development for our complete process, including equipment selection
  • partner with the process engineers to design experiments to validate process conditions and process unit operations from the laboratory to pilot and commercial scale
  • identify, develop and implement novel technologies required to increase yield, robustness and stability of key processes
  • collaborate with internal departments and manage external relationships with strategic partners
  • assist in the reviews and approval of process submittals, support vendor FAT, SAT execution and approval when necessary
  • mentor entry biotech engineers to expand their technical bioprocess knowledge as it relates to equipment technology, process flows, capacity analysis, material balances and schematic deliverables development

Job requirements

This job will suit you best if you

  • have a Ph.D. in chemical engineering or biotechnology - or you have an M.Sc degree with exceptional experience in a related field
  • bring at least 5 years of relevant industry experience, with excellent knowledge of designing and implementing bioprocessing concepts
  • have experience in defining pilot and industrial settings for recombinant protein production systems or equivalent
  • are skilled in the use of (single use) bioreactors, centrifugation, cross-flow filtration, and separation equipment
  • are excited to do something for the first time in respect to equipment and processes that can be implemented in the scaling of our cell-free production platform
  • are fluent in the English language, fluent in the German language is a plus
